Leon Manssur, producer

junho 24th, 2010

In the last 10 years, I have produced or mastered quite some albums, not mentioning demos… Here they are:

Apocalyptic Raids - Only Death is Real...

In 2000, we had to take over the production of our first album. Even though I nowadays consider the results kind of a desaster, we were satisfied back then and it seems people are too. This album sold 3.000 + copies…

Diabolic Force - Old School Attack

In 2001, Whipstriker from Diabolic Force invited me to help producing their demo. It was scheduled for recording at Astral Music Record, where we would end up recording the following albums. The results here are still raw, but now it sounds better. At least we had control over the whole process. The nice vocals sound you hear was obtained by patching a guitar compressor pedal through the (analog!) mixing desk! It ended up so well that the demo became an EP released on our former label.

AR2 TROTSR

That paved the way for the recording of the new Apokalyptic Raids album… And so we did in 2002. The Return of The Satanic Rites explodes right in your face! Not a 100% perfect record, but 100% honest.

Brotherhood In Darkness

The Underground Storms Eternally (Compile)

As I continued to make contacts through the underground, people asked me to master some stuff. These releases include the above split CD with The Light Of Dark (Mexico) and Throneum (Poland) and then the Throneum demos.

AL 1

AL 2

It wasn’t long until I started mastering for our former label. It was of great pleasure to get the best sound out of brazilian pioneers Azul Limão’s recordings from the early 80’s…

Apokalyptic Raids - The Third Storm

In 2004, we had to put out another album, and we went on to produce The Third Storm. This album was Hellpreacher’s debut. It is my favourite one, until now. The best sounding one, some remarkable tunes.

Farscape Demon´s massacre

Farscape Killers

Farscape For Those Who Love To Kill

After doing the job with Diabolic Force, and having Skullkrusher playing in Apokalyptic Raids, it was a natural thing for me to produce his band with Whipstriker, Farscape. The first one for Dark Sun label 2003, the second one for Unsilent 2006, in which session the Atomic Roar debut was also recorded, as well as a couple of EPs from 2005 and 2007 that ended up on the “For Those…” album. Each one of these releases sold at least 2000+ copies, and show their evolving playing skills and also my evolving producing skills!

Em Ruínas - From the Speed Metal Graves

Working with Unsilent, I was going to São Paulo a lot, and soon I started producing some stuff for them. The Em Ruínas album was to be their first release, but only now it is being finished.

Breakdown

I also mastered this fine album of Power Thrashing Death Metal from BreakDown, another promising band from São Paulo.

Clenched Fist

And this album by Heavy Metal band Clenched Fist, although uncredited.  (Notice the bells on track 7: they are the same effects I used in the First Farscape album!)

flagelador a noite do ceifador

Another album full of great tunes I produced at Astral Music Record in 2005. Hellpreacher played the bass in the band at some point. Today, Slaughterer plays session drums for them.

Atomic Roar The Warfare Merchants

This was a bonus recording from the Killers on The Loose sessions. With a lot of things going on with everyone, this album would only see the light of day in 2009… This band features Hellpreacher on vocals.

metalmorphose maldicao

Metalmorphose comp

Ultimatum

In 2008, Metalmorphose reformed and, between 2008-2010, 3 albums were released/rereleased. But I had mastered this stuff years before, for my personal collection and for a rerelease that never happened until last year.

While working on these loved albums, I could never imagine what was yet to come!

Mustang Tá Tudo Mudando

Due to my working on Ultimatum, Carlos Lopes (formerly on Dorsal Atlântica) invited me to do mastering of his third rock’n roll band Mustang album, Tá Tudo Mudando Mas Nem Sempre Pra Melhor (Everything Changes, But Not Always For The Better).

DA 2

DA 3

DA 4

And then I mastered the remaining Dorsal Atlântica rereleases in 2007-2009. It was a great opportunity to take a second look at history here!

mustang santafe

It was a natural thing then to master the following Mustang album Santa Fé. That album presents a softer rock’n roll, with some folk and brazilian music/brazilian rock influences, and it was kinda out of the usual stuff I produce/master.

Mustang V

The following one, Mustang V, was a DOUBLE album mixed by me from scratch. It goes even further on the rock/folk/funk/acoustic/electronic music/brazilian music/samba/portuguese music direction (in fact, it goes in all directions!) and it surely was a big challenge to me as a producer!

Heavy 25 anos

Heavy was a record store/label that released bands such as Dorsal Atlêntica, Azul Limão, Extermínio, Calibre 38, Metralion, X-Rated, Eros, and Tubarões Voadores. All of them are present on this nice compilation in the 25th anniversary of the label’s inception, and it was my job to make them sound good together! It was like mastering 10 albums in one…

Metalmorphose odisseia

In 2009, Metalmorphose did their live album, and in 2010 I went to mix it. It was surely a challenge to mix a live album, with all the noises and leaking from many microfones, with such delicate passages and also with 3 guitars ins half of the album! I liked the results very much.

Vol.4

And now, the new Apokalyptic Raids album!!! Recorded last year with the new lineup, it features a more direct approach to our sound, with less “risks” compared to The Third Storm. It is a heavier album, maybe more focused. Out in 1 month from now!!!

And that’s it for now. Sorry for the long post, but hey, it was 10 years of my life!

Cativeiro Studios

maio 20th, 2010

Vejam!!!

Our drummer Márcio Cativeiro has bought a rehearsal/recording studio. It is now the new home of Apokalyptic Raids!

It will be improved in a lot of ways, but it is VERY NICE to start with!!!

We are greatly pleased with such a major step in a professional path, a step which we couldn’t even imagine 3 years ago!

Necromaniac’s new gear

março 26th, 2010

(This post is for vintage guitar freaks!)

I got a new guitar!

It has P-90 pickups. That’s what made the Tony Iommi sound in the first 6 or 7 Sabbath albums. Everyone is used to humbuckers or the thin strat style singles these days, but the P-90, also known as “soapbar” because of its rectangular shape,  is a thick single pickup with a unique sound.

There goes a picture of it in detail:

P90 pickups. Notice the stop-bar bridge. This guitar is stable as hell!

And another picture of my study room showing all my current equipment set for experimenting with tones. I have been using just the STL, the wah wah and the GT2, since 2003 or 2004 .

Once again in Heavy Duty (Rio de Janeiro), to our loyal home crowd. DJ Terror and Uncle Bruce in charge of production, and the best sound for vocals ever!!!

O tempo passa, ela grávida começa a querer dinheiro.

A esposa toma conta do bebe. A casa cai.

Downloads

outubro 9th, 2009

We have noticed that many blogs feature our albums with links for downloads, for which we do not receive any payment.

Such links usually do not feature links to our site or myspace, a band bio or photos, like a fanzine would.

Funny as it is, we are an independent band and we produce all our stuff ourselves. Consequently, we do make a living on our album sales, contrary to what is commonly said, that bands do not get enough pay from records. We do get all our pay from album sales.

The fact is that we are in big trouble when downloads are so widespread. Also, we can not be against technology, that would be pointless. But I’d also like to point out that the drop in CD sales in the last 2 years punishes the smaller bands more severely.

So we have decided to adopt a policy that would be good to our real fans, and on the other hand be up-to-date with the way things have become. We have to receive payment for the music we play and record, in one way or another, if we are to make more of it.

We are asking for it directly from you, the decent Apokalyptic Raids fan. If you did not buy a physical copy, but instead downloaded one of our albums, heard it and liked it, and if you feel a connection to our message, you are kindly urged to use the button below to send us US$5 per album via Paypal. That is exactly what we would get from an album sale, manufacturing and shipping costs discounted.

In exchange for that, you’ll receive files containing full album art, high quality mp3, photos, lyrics, whatever comes with the physical album, as well as the invaluable feeling of doing the right thing.

Music is art. Giving your support is priceless.

Estamos pedindo diretamente a você, o fã decente do Apokalyptic Raids.

Endorsements

outubro 9th, 2009

In order to keep the band growing more and more, we have started a campaign to get some suppliers. Their links are on our home page…

Until the present moment the list is

Sonar drumsticks: they provide great drumsticks (Slaughterer claims he couldn’t break them) and the stuff can have custom logo/signature. So now we have our own drumsticks.

BMA racks: they do light weight aluminium cymbal racks, so now Slaughterer can use all his cymbals without having to carry around a lot of single stands.

Meteoro Amplifiers have a lending system that can provide us with their best amps when we have gigs in their influence area. Their tone can be very close to a Marshall stack…

Carlito straps does great quality customized leather straps for our axes.

AMR has granted us some bonus hours because we have been recording our stuff there for quite some years now, including 3 AR’s albums and also Necromaniac’s production of Farscape (2 albums and 2 eps), Diabolic Force, Atomic Roar and Flagelador.

We are still searching for some other suppliers and news will be presented as each deal is closed.

Web stuff

outubro 9th, 2009

In our recent attempt to get our web presence up-to-date (our sound remaining the same, ça va sans dire), we have decided to replace the old and battered web site by this new one.

The domain/e-mail address apokalypticraids.com was long needed too.

The solution we are implementing features this blog you now read, that hopefully will take care of updates more frequently, and a web store in 4 different languages and 3 different currencies.

We are still working on a new myspace and a possibly a youtube channel.

Here’s a video of last year’s Roça’n'Roll festival (approx. 4.000 people):

New album

outubro 9th, 2009

We are still working on our new album. It is delayed due to the hectic recording schedule at AMR. We have been doing our albums there since 2003, so it will be worth the wait.

We are still trying to find a proper cover art. The “Phonocopia” concept is completely developed. We just need some one to do it in the appropriate style.

The new album will be a co-operation with some labels. As we all know, the CD market is on a crash, but we need to expand. This time the intended print run is 2.000 copies for a start. So, the only way to grow the way our new album demands is to unite some 4 or 5 brazilian labels with whom we had good relations. The exact names will be here as soon as the list is definitive.

We did record a lot of outtakes and we intend to release some EPs and split releases soon.

Splits and EPs

outubro 9th, 2009

First, there is a long-planned split CD with Farscape. It will feature 5 or 6 tracks by each band, some cover versions, some unreleased tracks. They were recorded some years ago as outtakes from our previous albums. On this CD, Pedro Rocha plays the drums both for Farscape and for us. Bass is taken care partly by A. Aguinaga (from our first 2 albums) and by Hellpreacher.

Equally long awaited is the split 7″EP with Nordic Mist, on Hell’s Headbangers.

Hell’s Headbangers is also to re-release our first 2 albums on LP as well.

There is also a split with Atomic Roar on the make. We call it the AR-AR split. Our bass player does the vocals on Atomic Roar, and the remaining members are Farscape members.

More split releases will be out, and info will be published here as soon as they are confirmed…

Shows

outubro 9th, 2009

It seems there will be a gig in November and a festival in December, both yet to be confirmed.

Another Brazilian tour will follow, after the new album is out…
